Texas A&M University’s South Campus Recreation Center provides a dynamic space for fitness, recreation, and community engagement. Gessner Engineering provided detailed surveying, utility verification, and potholing clarified underground conditions and prevented conflicts during construction. This integrated into our civil engineering design and resolved drainage, access, and utility coordination challenges, creating a site layout that improved circulation, ensured ADA-compliant access, and supported future amenities such as volleyball and turf areas. Ongoing support during bidding and construction phase services helped ensure accurate building placement, smooth coordination, and a successful project delivery.

This site was located along Bizzell Street, one of the campus’s higher-traffic corridors. Because of this, the site required careful planning to protect pedestrian safety and maintain traffic flow during construction. Its proximity to an active golf course added another layer of coordination to avoid disrupting operations and preserve positive stakeholder relationships. In addition, the project required careful grading to meet ADA accessibility standards while still addressing stormwater management and environmental constraints, including a nearby wetland area.
Solutions
To minimize disruptions, a coordinated traffic control and pedestrian detour plan maintained safety throughout construction, while proactive communication with the adjacent golf course helped reduce operational impacts. Stormwater management was addressed through the design of a naturalized detention pond that blended into the surrounding landscape, protected nearby wetlands, and met drainage requirements. ADA-compliant access was achieved using strategically designed ramps, landings, and grading adjustments, allowing the project to be completed with minimal disruption to both vehicular and pedestrian activity.
