Texas A&M University’s new Business Education Complex is designed to redefine traditional learning by integrating technology, collaborative workspaces, and real-world industry engagement. Geotechnical evaluation and recommendations guided the foundation design and site preparation, while surveying collected necessary topography and utility information for a coordinated design effort. Through thoughtful civil design, we optimized grading, drainage, and utility systems to support long-term performance and accessibility, and materials testing services provided the precision and quality assurance necessary to deliver a sound and durable facility.

Challenges
Delivering this transformative facility came with complex engineering challenges. The geotechnical scope required drilling operations within an active campus environment, necessitating strict safety coordination to protect students and faculty. Additionally, groundwater conditions and spatial constraints limited the use of temporary casings for straight shaft piers. The civil engineering team also navigated extensive underground utilities, some of which could not be relocated due to cost and feasibility. The building’s placement was carefully designed around an existing fiber line. Finally, limited site space made stormwater detention another key challenge.
Solutions
To overcome these obstacles, the geotechnical team established a secure site perimeter for drilling operations. They conducted site visits during pier construction and recommended a slurry method for shaft installation. This approach allowed for continuous pier placement without the need to reposition the crane, reducing construction time and logistical challenges. On the civil side, the team incorporated underground detention solutions and adapted the site layout to work within the existing infrastructure constraints.
