Humble Senior Activity Center

The Humble Senior Activity Center was developed to replace a repurposed church facility and better support the city’s growing senior population. The facility features an expansive multi-purpose room, classroom spaces, a fitness center. It is anchored by the central great room and library. Gessner helped deliver a safe, accessible, and well-coordinated facility through integrated geotechnical, surveying, civil, and structural services. Early soil evaluation informed stable foundation and pavement design. Precise surveying provided accurate data needed for efficient planning and construction. Civil design improved drainage, utilities, fire access, and parking to enhance site functionality, and structural solutions helped realize the architectural vision of creating warm, welcoming mass timber spaces built to withstand the demands of the region.

Challenges
Given the scale of the project and limited suppliers in the region, one of the primary challenges on this project was selecting mass timber products that were structurally appropriate, architecturally desirable, and readily available in order to deliver the owner’s vision for the spaces.
Solutions
Through the design process, the team worked to check availability from local suppliers to avoid delays. Close collaboration with the architect helped fine-tune beam depths, brace layouts, and building heights to preserve the integrity of the all-wood structural systems. It also served to create exposed mass timber volumes within the showcase spaces of the building—reserving steel only for freestanding, non-building elements. Additional coordination ensured that structural bracing could accommodate ductwork routing, particularly in transition zones between framing types.
