Harris County designed Spring Fire Stations Nos. 74 and 75 to address rapid growth and evolving community needs in the surrounding area. For Station 74, Gessner provided geotechnical engineering services. Subsurface investigations, including drilled borings and laboratory testing, informed reliable recommendations for site preparation, foundation design, and pavement systems. For both projects, Gessner provided structural engineering services that support the operational demands of active emergency facilities while creating architecturally expressive spaces for occupants. The structures feature exposed timber and steel trusses and a long span metal deck extending from interior to exterior spaces, resulting in durable, visually striking civic buildings. Through coordinated design and construction-phase support, Gessner helped ensure the facilities were delivered safely, efficiently, and in alignment with the projects’ functional and architectural goals.

The project’s design relied on architecturally exposed structural elements, requiring the structure to perform efficiently while remaining visually clean and intentional. The roof system was subject to high wind forces that introduced atypical loading behavior, adding complexity to the truss design. Integrating steel, timber, and concrete within these exposed assemblies required careful coordination to maintain alignment between structural performance and architectural intent. Limited vertical space above the sloped roof deck further complicated coordination with building systems.
Solutions
Gessner Engineering worked closely with the architect, contractor, and suppliers early in the process to develop practical, buildable solutions. The team refined structural layouts and connection details to support the roof while maintaining the desired look. By coordinating closely on system routing and material availability, the design stayed efficient, constructible, and true to the architectural vision.
