This Winding Way residence replaced a 1960s home while maintaining a similar footprint to preserve the property’s mature tree canopy. The design prioritizes indoor–outdoor living through large openings and seamless transitions to the surrounding landscape. Accurate boundary and topographic surveying provided a reliable base for thoughtful site planning and precise construction layout. Gessner Engineering supported a stable, constructible home and pool by identifying soil conditions early and guiding foundation design to reduce long-term risk. Structural solutions efficiently translated the architectural vision into coordinated framing and foundation systems, supported by clear documents and responsive construction coordination.

Challenges
Preserving the existing trees limited the building footprint and required careful coordination of structural elements. Large openings, roof transitions, and clerestory windows created tight conditions where framing, glazing, and door systems had to work together. The back porch door required a specialized hanging system at a roof transition, adding complexity to the framing. The detached guest house introduced a different architectural style, requiring a thoughtful approach to ensure it complemented the main residence.
Solutions
Gessner Engineering collaborated closely with the architect to develop framing solutions that supported the design while fitting within the project’s constraints. A unique structural approach was developed for the back porch door to accommodate the hanging system without compromising performance. Steel columns were carefully coordinated to support the roof while maintaining clerestory glazing. Detailed drawings and clear communication helped guide construction, while the guest house was designed with a post-and-beam system that aligned with its architectural character and provided a stable, open structure.
